Jang Sung-Ho

Abstract
Fall related injuries are a serious public health issue among people aged over 65 years. More than a third of older adults fall cause serious injuries such as fractures or head traumas. Nonfatal fall injuries are associated with decreased functioning and loss of independence. In this article, we discussed the epidemiology, preventing methods, and several guidelines of falls in elderly. We carried out a search on Medline through pubmed and Google scholar. On the database, we used ¡°falls, elderly, guideline, indicator¡± as search words. In epidemiology, there were several type of definitions of falls and several classification methods of falls by trigger factor, consequence, and history. And we describe the incidence, mortality, and medical cost related to falls in elderly. For preventing falls, it was needed to modify the rick factors for falls. Various risk factors categorized to extrinsic and intrinsic factors, and the factors which cannot be
modified and the modifiable factors. The Assessing Care of Vulnerable Elders (ACOVE) project was a comprehensive set of quality-assessment tools for ill older persons. We introduced the ACOVE indicators for falls and mobility problems in vulnerable elders. The quality of falls care in older adults is suboptimal. If we can reduce the risk factors for falling, then we can reduce the incidence and the morbidity associated with falls in elderly.
